Explorers Research	The explorers were chosen, but little or no research was done.	There was some research done on the two explorers, but all questions were not addressed	Research was done on the exploreres. All questions were answered. Some answers were incomplete.	All explorer questions were answered with evidence of thought and understanding.	More than the required research was done on both explorers
Information on Explorers compared	No evidence of the group sharing information	Venn Diagram is created, but the information contained the the project is minimal. Project is not neat and difficult to understand.	Venn Diagram is created and information from research is evident. All four exploreres routes are identified Few mistakes and the project is fairly neat..few smudge marks. The compass rose is on the map along with a key.	All research collected from feature map was included in the Venn diagram and it was easy to understand. Neat product with no or few smudge marks.	Venn diagram was above and beyond the expectation. Included all of the expected information and also included information from additional research.
Mapping Skills	No evidence that students know the routes the explorers took on their voyage.	Routes are on students maps, but they have many mistakes and they are not easy to understand. Lots of smudges and scratch out marks.	Routes are on map with few mistakes and presentation is fairly neat. All four explorer's routes are identified along with a compass rose and a map key.	All four routes are completely accurate. Four different colors were used. A compass rose was used along with a map key. The map was very neat and appealing.	The map meets all of the criteria outlined in #4 and it goes beyond. The presentation of the mape is elaborate. It is evident that the student spent time putting their own creative self into the presentaion.
Group Voyage	No evidence of the group being able to plan a trip...all work is incomplete.	Evidence of planning being done. But it is not complete.	Crew list is made, Route is outlined, inventory is there but perhaps not as well thought out. Narrative was written and included items from their planning.	Crew list was made. Food and other supply list is made. Map is made outlining the explorer's proposed journey. The originating continent and the distination continent must be identified. Purpose of your journey must be identified. What are you looking for? Planning sheets will include all of that information.	Presentation of the trip was outstanding and all components of the journey was planned for and evidence showed that students truly understood the project and went beyond to make the project outstanding.
Oral Presentation	Either did not perform or did not participate	Speaker used words that the audience could understand. Speaker included few background information and the presenation did not stay completely focused on the topic.	The speakers vocabulary on the subject was strong. The speaker used credible library and or internet resources. The presentation was good but not complete. only a few parts were missing. Did not use filler words (uhm, uh, ah, mm, like) Speaker also didn't call attention to him or herself by apologizing.	Speaker used strong vocabulary and unambigiuous. Speaker gave credit to the resources in the speech. Visual aids were easy to read or see Speakers spoke to the entire audience and their pronunciation was clear and easy to understand. Speaker maintained eye-contact most of the time.	In addition to all of the criteria met for a 4 the speakers in the group did not read from their notes, their presentation was superior in every way.
Narrative Writing	Story was not completed.	Story was complete but did not have a story structure. No defined beginning with a problem, problem solving and a solution.	Narrative had an interesting beginning and demonstrated good writing. However, there were still mistakes thoughout the piece in spelling and sentence structure. Paper was published.	Narrative had a interesting begining, a problem that was worked out by the end of the story. There were no errors thoughtout the paper. Paper was published.	In addition to all of the criteria met for a 4 the writers of the narrative published the book in a very creative way. Examples are a scroll, a antique looking captains log, etc.
